My Stitching Pet peeve....

It doesn't matter what we're doing we always have a pet peeve related to it, here's my stitching pet peeve!!!

In all the symbols in the whole wide world... do you really have to use the same symbol in every configuration known to man?  It makes chart reading a pain.  Also, if you're dyslexic like me, it can spell disaster!!!  Right now I'd cheerfully love to kill the person who charted these triangles!!!

What's your stitching pet peeve?

I agree!

My second pet peeve is colored charts that don't have a symbol (only the color). UGH!

I hate charts on multiple pages that have a few rows/columns of overlap. It's supposed to help, but it just confuses me and I almost always end up stitching duplicates.

That is a good one or when backstitching lines run straight over the symbols leaving you to guess.

I am SO with you, Dani. I am working on a chart right now with double greater than and double less than symbols (<< and >>). And they're charted right next to each other! Srsly????

And I always thought that I am the only one doing the guessing how to finish off a 'straight line' and wondering if that is how it should be.

ohhh dear ... not good ... at least you are highlighting so you can see where you have stitched .... have you thought about making the section bigger so that it easier to sort out ???? or is that just me getting old ...lol love mouse xxxx

I'm with you, Dani. But what I hate even more are charts without any symbols, just colours. They leave me guessing about the 4 or 5 or 6 different reds. I even stopped buying charts without symbols no matter how much I love the design.

It's the coloured charts I find difficult to read, or teeny tiny ones where the designer is determined they WILL fit the whole thing on one A5 sheet of paper with room for the key underneath

ahaha, I know, I know ! I´m not dislexic, but at times just to much in a hurry..........
so I´m stitching in the eavening, using the wrom colour, like light grey iso white, or mistaking a symbol for one that looks a bit like it, just course I did not bother to take a closer look !
and then I keep wondering why I´m using bright red in an erea where it´s just whites and greys......
I blame it on a busy life and old age now, lol !

That chart is awful! So confusing.
I hate those charts that are so big that you have to fold them.

hehe...I think between you and all your commenters (is that a word?), every one of my pet peeves has been mentioned. But my ultimate is the same as yours Dani - very similar symbols. Let's face it, there are enough different shapes in the world to NOT have to use every triangle known to man on the same chart...lol.

I am right there with all of you but try doing one with colored squares with similar symbols too. What are the designers thinking, this doesn't make it easier.

Sing it, sister! When I know the symbols are similar I don't mind it, but when I don't, and I see < on the chart and grab the > thread, it really annoys me!

My other pet peeve - needing one color for 8 stitches on a 14 page pattern, threads charted without a DMC or Anchor conversion, and the way one designer always says "if you want the same, stitch the same", even though she uses hand dyed/overdyed/specialty fibers that won't look the same, and sometimes don't even look close, unless they come from the same dye lot. Grr.

You hit my biggest pet peeve! (I wonder what a peeve really looks like?) There are hundreds, if not thousands, of symbols to choose from now so there really isn't an excuse.

When I make my patterns-- there is only one triangle in it. If there is 2 or 3 --I change the symbol--not hard to do. I'm surprised designers do this.

I also really hate cross stitch magazines that have really small patterns-- I end up enlarging it and printing a copy I can actually read!

THIS!!! I HATE this so much, like when they do squares and if one half it coloured it is one colour and the other half another...it sends my eyes nuts!

Linda said...

I agree 100% Dani. I also agree with all the other comments. Why oh why do they have to use alike symbols. They must not stitch their own designs.

I completely agree with you - and it happens so often! I also hate charts that only have colour blocks and no symbols, it can be so confusing!

Bea said...

I agree with you Dani, but my biggest peeve is coloured charts with no symbols. The colours are NEVER different enough.

Jan said...

I agree completely. The ones that really get me is / and \

Bonnie Brown said...

I would have to agree that that chart is insane! There are 26 letters and 10 numbers that should be used before any other symbol should be turned on it's side!

Carol said...

Oh, that would drive me crazy, too, Dani!! And for a dyslexic stitcher, I can't even imagine how hard it must be!! I admire you for even trying a chart like this...

(And knowing that you're dyslexic now, I admire all those complicated huge pieces that you stitch even more :)

Catching up on blog reading here!
Similar symbols is my pet peeve too. Also using symbols which don't relate to the tone of the colour, eg a small dot for black or a black square for a pale colour.
On your chart you can at least see that the dark hearts will be the darker colour.
I often highlight my working copies BEFORE I stitch the colour so I can see where I have to go.

ps loved your earlier post entitled "Kindness"

Melanie said...

Haha! I've DEFINITELY run into that with more than a few charts. Also: hate the charts that aren't printed dark enough so you can't SEE them well enough, no matter the symbol.

It's been great reading everyone's comments for this post.

Hi, Dani; I'm with Emma, with the half and half business. That makes me nuts too and I use a magnifying glass to stitch too! I feel like the needle is about the size of one of my fingers and trying to get it right in the centre to separate the 2 colours is impossible. Loved your little red santa and his sleigh. Just curious, what is WIPocalypse?

Ohh I so agree! I didn't even realize the symbols were going in a different direction until I read your whole post. I also hate coloured charts and charts that are printed so small that you need a magnifying glass to read them.

My "favourite" are the two filled in circles - one small, one big. Yeah, coz it's so easy to see the difference when they're not side by side. The forward and backward slashes also cause me much joy, it's easy to reverse them in your head. Well, at least in mine.
