Saturday PhotoHunt - Shelter

This week's PhotoHunt theme is - Shelter

I'm very fortunate, where I live and my life circumstances have allowed me to live a great life so far.  I've also been lucky to experience what the third world is really like, the last five years (this is my 6th) I've taken students to the Dominican Republic on a third world experience.  For those in the third world, shelter is so much more basic than what we call shelter/home here in the first world.  Though this home is very basic and pieced togehter there was something comforting to me when I saw the cat just inside the door.  Which just shows no matter how basic or opulent a shelter is there are things that no matter how rich are poor you are make it a home and shows deep down we're all the same no matter how rich or poor you are.

It's really hard to grasp just how different lives are around the world. I know we see it on tv and the internet but living it and seeing it first hand is so much more real. The cat just makes it more poignant in a way - mind you, I'm sure it feeds itself.

Great photo and an excellent reminder to appreciate what we have.

I remember driving on a street in Atlanta, Georgia where the homes were VERY ramshackle. Some didn't even have roofs. I thought surely no one lived there.

Then I saw children, LITTLE children in a window.

All of the sudden, my little tiny house seemed like a palace.

It sure puts things in perspective.

We are very fortunate and it's difficult to imagine that anyone lives like that but it's reality for many. Love the cat sitting at the door too :)
